In watching this video, I was struck by the gymnast's ability to reach his hands out past his toes. I have a couple of gymnasts who appear to be completely flat in a closed pike stretch, but whose arms still do not extend nearly this far past the tips of their toes.
Is this just an issue of body type (meaning that such kids simply will never be able to do a clean jam)? Or is there some hidden element of flexibility that I'm not seeing here?

Pike is a stretch measure of back and hamstring flexibility. Many kids curve their backs backs (upper and lower) during a pike stretch, however its a whole another ball games trying to keep a flat back. Even though you want to have the chest in, you definitely want the lower back to flat enough to allow for the compression.
I think any1 who can achieve a good tight pike, and has their splits (front) should be able to do a good clean entry into the jam. pay attn to compression key
