(c)1997 National Football League; NBC Universal

This is the intro for the 1996 AFC Divisional playoff between the #5 seeded Jacksonville Jaguars (one year removed from expansion) and the top-seeded Denver Broncos in one of the most thrilling playoff games ever (when it appeared in the NFL's Greatest Games series; it would be dubbed "Ambush at Mile High"). This is the only 1996 NFL on NBC intro I have discovered.

Jacksonville would go on to win 30-27 to hand what (in the America's Game on the 1997 Denver Broncos) John Elway would consider the most frustrating loss in his career.

NOTES:
1. This would be the only loss for the Denver Broncos at Mile High during the 1996 season.
2. This would (famously) be the last game that the "Orange Crush" uniforms were worn as the regular unis (Denver would switch to their current uniforms the following season; only bringing the Orange Crush version back for a 2001 Thanksgiving match with Dallas).
3. This was the final game officiated by Red "First DOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNN" Cashion.

ANNOUNCERS: Dick Enberg, Paul Maguire, Phil Simms
SIDELINE REPORTERS: Jim Gray, Beasley Reece (normally the analyst opposite Don Criqui at this point)

  • god I can't believe mark brunell is still in the league

  • @alakazam9891 Yeah, I was surprised to see he was still around.

  • And if I'm not mistaken I think that was Jim Kelly's final game the week before

  • @GrassValleyGreg True. Also the finale for Bills center Kent Hull (apparently Father Time had caught the Bills, because this probably was the last postseason appearance for a sizeable number of the remaining contributors to the Bills' Super Bowl run {at least in Buffalo uniforms}).

  • @tech9393 The Randy Edelman "NFL on NBC" theme is so epic. That theme should be the theme song for next year's Oscars, LOL.

  • @jbsmg The Broncos would've ROLLED that Viqueens team. Elway vs. Cunningham? Seriously? Terrell Davis vs. Robert Smith? Not even close. Shanahan vs. Dennis Green? The strength of that Viqueens team was Moss/Carter at WR...and I STILL wouldve taken the Sharpe/McCaffrey/Rod Smith group over them.

  • The Broncos were SHOCKED in this game at home. I'll never forget the pain on Elway's face after that late Jimmy Smith TD. But to Denver's credit, they came back from this crushing loss to win the next two Super Bowls and make Elway one of the games best QB's ever to play.

  • I'd like to see the Jimmy Smith TD in the 4th Q. I think Denver was a 16/17 point favorite. Jax played well @NE but came up short to go to the SB.

  • @alakazam9891 he Bret farvin

  • @BroncoTedKoz I saw these games & I'd rank the pain...

    1. SB 22--Denver was favored to beat the Redskins. 1st qtr looked like a Broncos win by a blow-out. Denver dominated on D & O. In 2nd qtr...disaster.

    2. '96 Jags--Denver was clearly the better team & picked to go to the SB.

    3. '05 Steelers--Denver was superior, but couldnt stop Big-Ben & Plummer had his worst game of the season.

    4. SB 21--Giants just too good.

    5. SB 24--49ers were WAY too good, even against Denver's #1 D.

  • Go Jags!

  • @BroncoTedKoz I don't even remember what I said, I don't even remember ever seeing this video. And I don't feel like looking up what I said, but what you just said are opinions dude. To you those were the ones that hurt the most, but I wasn't even alive during those SB's, so obviously they didn't hurt me. They were over by the time I understood the concept of football. But from what I hear everyone knew the Broncos were going to lose to the 49ers. Expected losses don't hurt like expected wins.

  • @724Broncofan No way. That game hurt but in no way did it hurt like the others. Here are the rankings of painful Bronco losses.

    1, 1996 Jacksonville (Elway's last legit chance?)

    2. San Fran - Superbowl 24

    3. Washington Redksins - Superbowl 22

    4. New York Giants - Superbowl 21

    5. Pittsburgh 2005

  • Green Bay vs Denver in 1996? Please. Denver was 12-1 and had everything wrapped up at that point. They didn't try to win that game. They had Bill Musgrave as QB and gave him a vanilla game plan because Shanahan didn't want to reveal anything down the road. (Just like he did against the Dolphins in 1998)

Green Bay would have had no answer for the Bronco running game, just like they didn't in Superbowl 32.

  • @jbsmg

Yea- that had to be even worse for you guys.
