Die Sehnsucht - the foundamental aspect of this song.
I think Hermann Prey brought this out tremendously well in his interpretation.

ersatzwerk I agree with you totally. To me Hotter was the undisputed master of this song, as he was of so many others...but it's nowhere to be found on youtube! Fortunately I have my own recording of his entire Schgwanengesang and listen to it constantly. The very first Lied "Frùhlingssensucht" is also missing here...a shame.

I agree to some extent, I think Prey has done way better than this in his carreer. I prefer Fischer-Dieskau's version of this. But Prey is nontheless a really great singer !

How can you call this labored? I don't think that you understand Lieder. I find the facial expression and the honest straightforward singing to be an example of Prey's art in its finest form!
