Absolutely, and it's counterproductive. There's really nothing that inspired more apathy in me than those pointless exercises- the word searches and crossword puzzles, for example. Learning itself was great- I wanted to know History and Science. But when it came to finding vocab words in a 50X50 block of letters, playing with toys was far more important. There was often more History and Science in that than the lessons we were learning.
I agree. It seems that educators and the system itself save such higher thinking patterns for only the children identified as "academically gifted." Then they bore the children considered average or below average to death!
To you teachers out there: I had problems learning to read early on, and got D's through elementary school. When I got to high school things changed because we started talking about real issues. Instead of comparing and contrasting steak and ice cream to teach compare/contrast, why not use something more important like knowledge vs. power? You'll get people to think, they'll actually be interested, and learning in elementary school wouldn't seem such a waste.
...And people wonder why kids are dumber these days than in the past.
Google "The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America" by former Reagan Admin US Dept of Education Secretary, Charlotte Iserbyte. You can download the book on pdf for free. Parents and students should be outraged by this garbage.

She almost said, "This is so we will know where to place you", but instead said, "So we can better help you." She said something like that.
