  • @wartmcbeighn the very 1st Mustangs DID have the Allison, and were relegated to secondary roles....the Mustangs after that came with the Merlin....the main reason that the P-51 is argued as the best aircraft of WWII is because it what all other allied fighters couldn't do: fly from London to Berlin, get into a tangle with the Luftwaffe, and come right back

  • I would argue that the P-51 is not the best fighter of WW2 since there are other contenders just as good...take the P-51 as an all-american fighter...fine, remove the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, throw in the Allison and see how it does...chances are not that great. So comparing the Later marks of Zero, Yak 9, Spitfire, Focke Wulf Fw-190, Me 109...cant really come up with a 'best" overall

  • @wartmcbeighn

the mustang is considered the best, beacuse of its combination of these qualities, Durability, Reliability, Maneuverability, Speed, Range, it was Economical, It was easy to fly... all these qualities, i don't think there is a fighter during WWII that had as many good qualities as the mustang, that is what made it one of the best fighters, is it had a whole lot of everything to offer!

  • @Scharfschutzen1

yes... the BF-109 was a inspiration, but buy no means was the P-51 Mustang the same airplane.

  • @wartmcbeighn

comparing it to those fighters, it has several advantages, agents the Zero it is far more durable, and much faster, and can take the stresses of high G maneuvers better, in some cases the mustang is more agile beacuse of this. it has close performance to the spitfire, probably better at very high altitudes, is more durable, and has a much longer range. more compatible performing YAK-9s and YAK-3s where highly un reliable and had a short range, and weren't very durable.

  • nice plane!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Exceptionally irritating that the narrator does not understand that the RR Merlin and the Packard Merlin were different engines... this is a Packard Merlin.

  • The first narrator that enjoy's instead of annoy's!

    Nice clip!

  • i love that plain

  • one of my fave movies is Empire of the Sun, and fave part is when the Americans bomb the Prisoner camp in Japan and all these Mustangs start annihalating the japs.
