The term Border States traces its roots back to the American Civil War, and applies to the states of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. These states mark the border between The North and The South, and feature dense forrests, beautiful rivers, and the backbone of mountains that form the Appalachians. As a result, the railroads that ultimately conquered this difficult terrain were forced to construct numerous trestles, cuts, and tunnels.

Photographer Rich Kugel takes us on an incredible journey, through a land that is steeped in scenic beauty and historical significance.

Highlights of this fascinating tour include:

* The CSX former Louisville and Nashville through Northern Kentucky

* Norfolk Southerns legendary Rathole District

* Copper Creek Viaduct and Natural Tunnel in remote western Virginia

* The CSX former B&O, including Cumberland, Harpers Ferry, and Brunswick

* The CSX former Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia

The border states continue to witness daily battles, as CSX and Norfolk Southern defiantly struggle against geography and surging traffic levels to link North and South!

  • God I had this tape now I can't find it anywhere. I love the scene at Gaithers with the CSX coal train and the K5H. Too bad it ain't in this preview.

  • @HarveyHenkelmann

Actually in this corporate world they are both corporations look it up on nasdaq.

  • @HarveyHenkelmann the Norfolk Southern Corporation is the holding company of the NS.

  • This video made me think of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

  • I always thought and read that the 13th star in the middle of the St Andrew's Cross was for Missouri, not Kentucky. Missouri, like Kentucky, had two governments, but it was the union government that was in power. Kentucky's Union government declared the blue grass state neutral and blasted both sides for "Invading" it's neutrality.

  • You are correct, Virginia was not a border state but a confederate state in fact Richmond was the capital.

  • ah but they tried to merge with sf but didn't get icc approval.

  • He was stopping at a station

  • Did the AMTRAK go into emergency around 5:35 ??

  • Great echo on the CSX horn @ 4:00 !
