I just got back into BLOOD and just found out how to records demos (dot "DEM" files).

To record a demo, start the game normally, select new game, episode, difficulty, and wile in the game, press the "Send_Message" key and type in (without quotes) "spielberg x yy", and replace x with the episode # you want to go to and yy with the mission you want to go to. So to record a demo on Episode 2 map 5, you would type in "spielberg 2 5" and to record a demo on Episode 5 map 11, you would type in "spielberg 5 11". The demo will be auto-saved in your blood directory as e?m?.dem, were the first "?" will be the episode # and the secant "?" will be the mission #, so Episode 2 map 5 will be E2M5.dem. I recommend you immediately rename them so they are not over written.

To play back a demo, at the command line, type in blood.exe -playback x.dem (or cryptic.exe if your recorded a demo for Cryptic Passage), replace x.dem with the name of your demo file, so to play back a demo named e1m1ec.dem, type in at the command line (without quotes) "blood.exe -playback e1m1ec.dem" and it will be played back as if you were playing.

Blood will automatically start playing any demo that's named "BLOOD000.dem - BLOOD999.dem" in the order there numbered, and the "-playback" command line parameter will be useless so make sure you delete, move, or rename those file before playing back a demo.

Note that to my knowledge, you can not record in multiplayer mode or record multiple levels on one demo file so no full episodes runs will work and not even a two level run will work, just one level runs.

I hope one day there will be a COMPET-N site for BLOOD like there is for DOOM and Heretic (HERETIC-N), competition would be so fun!

Here is what the official "README.TXT" file says about demo recording:

===========================================================================

If you read this far, you deserve something...

So, here's how to record demos yourself.

o Start Blood normally.
o Enter spielberg as a cheat
o Enter the episode and level to demo play
o Quit the game when done recording. (DON'T end the level while recording)
o A file of e?m?.dem will be created with the episode and level # of the
demo you recorded. Repeat for multiple levels (shareware comes with three demos, reg has four)
o When you have all demos recorded, rename them to blood000.dem to blood00x.dem in any order. Now when you start Blood, it will say "n demos in the loop" where n is x+1 and the demos will play on startup.

    v0.73

    Soundblaster IRQ: 5

I can't find the IRQ for GU.

It's currently using AWE 32 for sound.

Running off of a shortcut, and the target is: C:\Games\Blood\DOSBOX\dosbox.exe -conf dosboxBlood.conf -noconsole -c "exit"

    Do you have skype?

  • @flairphantem DOSBox 0.73 has many known problems relating to sound, get the latest version of DOSBox, 0.74. I think we should use an entirely knew config file so we can get a fresh start. Before we make the new conf file, get DOSBox 0.74

Now, go to dosboxBlood.conf and tell me what's in the auotoexec section.

This is so we can make the new conf file work properly.

When you get DOSBox 0.74, it's very important to NOT install to "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)."

  • @flairphantem What version of DOSBox is running the game (Ex 0.74) and what is your IRQ for Soundblaster and Gravis Ultrasound, you can find that info in the DOSBox config. And how are you starting BLOOD? Is their a desktop shortcut or are you running it vie Command Prompt? If it's a shortcut, tell me the "Target" and the "start in" because this will tell use what config file Blood is using. To find the Target and Start in of a shortcut, right click and then left click Properties.

I managed to get to the point where the "press a key to start Blood" screen was.

Once I started it, it gave me an error saying "playback failed, possibly due to an invalid or conflicting IRQ".

I suppose I should also mention that I have 5 DOSBOX config files:

    dosboxBlood

    dosboxBlood_addon

    dosboxBlood_client

    dosboxBlood_server

    dosboxBlood_setup

I've also had to re-install the game, since it wouldn't run properly after I edited them all. Now it's in "C:/Games/Blood".

  • @flairphantem So DOSBox is in "C:/Games/Blood/One Unit Whole" or a sub-directory of "C:/Games/Blood/One Unit Whole"?

If while in DOSBox's command prompt, you [really] are mounted at C:\games, then you would type in:

    cd blood\ONEUNI~1

To get to the "One unit Whole" Directory.

If you want me to make a video demonstrating how I recorded and played back a demo, let me know and I will. I'll install blood to "C:/Games/Blood/One Unit Whole" so that way, we'll have the same steps.

  • @archy9752

I downloaded Blood from GOG.com, and I've got all the stuff (including DOS box) in "C:/Games/Blood/One Unit Whole".

How can I get Dos to run things from "One unit Whole" Directory?

I've got it mounted to C:/Games.
