Communities have regathered, cities and towns are bustling and the people of Aceh are thriving, almost five years after the huge earthquake and tsunami waves claimed 167,000 lives, flattened hundreds of thousands of homes, destroyed 800 kilometres of coastline and washed away 3,000 hectares of land, taking roads, bridges, ports, schools and other vital infrastructure with it. Australia has contributed significantly to Acehs recovery, rebuilding infrastructure and assisting the people rebuild their lives.
