In Normandy, the branch line between Briouze and Bagnoles de l'Orne was closed some years ago but luckily, the rails were left intact.

Where once upon a time steam trains would bring passengers through the forest for holidays and to take the cure in Bagnoles, now there's just the VeloRail. Pay €4 and you can pedal your way through the scenery for 45 minutes. Highly recommended!

To turn around, you place a specially-adapted car jack underneath the car, raise it so the wheels are just clear of the track, spin the car around through 180°, and lower it.

  • Truly amazing how you were able to keep a nice, good steady pace of "cycling" that train car for the entire duration of that excursion. What do you attibute to your maintaining of so much energy for such a task, a diet of Weetabix and clean living?

  • @safari55 You got it in one!

  • Very nice. Never seen one of those, except in the cartoons (but they were hand-propelled, there).

Thanks! This is the only one I've seen. Then I checked on YouTube, and it seems there's lots more of them in various parts of France.

Sad to say, I bet they'd banned in the UK on those ubiquitous "Health & Safety" grounds.
