From the "Great Scenes from Shakespeare" series, this video portrays two key scenes from "The Merchant of Venice."

In Act I, Scene III, Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, agrees to lend money to a Christian man on the condition that if he defaults on the debt, Antonio, the debtor's friend, will pay with a pound of flesh. In Act IV, Scene I, Portia, disguised as a Doctor of Law, outwits Shylock in his claim for the pound of flesh. The Great Scenes series, in which actors perform in authentic period costumes on stages patterned after Elizabethan theaters, brings to life the atmosphere and themes of the larger play. Produced by Seaboume Enterprises, Ltd. 26 minutes, color.

  • Shylock is really the victim in this play. In comparison of the beginning of the play to the end, you gotta feel sorry for him. No wife, no daughter, barely any money, and he is forced to become the thing he hates, a Christian.

  • Christians fought against usury for 1500 years. Eventually diaspora Jews aggregated enough wealth to themselves that they were able to influence the Church and overcome our ban against usury. The world has been on a collision course with destruction ever since.

Usury is a terrible thing and the Jew knows this. But the Jew does not care. The Jew is drunk with power.

  • i think this quieter shylock is more likeable

  • How do one get hold of the DVD if living outside U.S? - thephoenixlearninggroup only ships to U.S it seems....

  • hey guys!

  • David Suchet (who most people know as Hercule Poirot) played Shylock in this version; Suchet was also one of the youngest actors to ever played the part, I believe, in British theatrical history since he was in his twenties or early thirties when he did this.

What a rare video! I hope the rest of the production is also available.

  • @tangoandcash1 In an Islamic court,Both Shylock and his debtor will be charged for indulging in an illegal transection involving Interest which is considered as "haram"or forbidden.Shylock will get his money back without interest and he will still keep his religion because there is no compulsion in religion..Both however have tol pay tax imposed on christian and jews living in a Muslim state. The contract will be concidered null and void
