Well, your Canadian friend told you a wrong advice. every country has immigrants that don't speak the language correctly even after having spent several years in it, so it's not a matter of where he lives... anyway, I told you the way his first name is supposed to be pronounced

I was advised by a Canadian, who spent several years living in Montreal, regarding this pronunciation. I believe they are authorized to speak French too? ;)
If you'd like to be a little more helpful, and specify what exactly you don't like about it, that might be more constructive.
