I've been fascinated by World War One for many years now, and one of the issues I've been especially preoccupied with is this country's, and the rest of the world's, shameful ignorance of one of the most important wars in 20th century history. Our only monument to this war in DC is a crumbling disaster that only salutes the men and women from the area. We need a National Monument for the thousands of men and women who lost their lives in the first true instance of modern warfare.
Franklin Woodruff Buckles was the last American doughboy left for 3 years of US history. Yesterday morning, he passed on, taking with him an incredible legacy. Riding on the Carpathia (the same ship that rescued survivors from the Titanic) to get to Europe, Frank served as an ambulance driver in France. He was promoted to corporal before being discharged in 1920. He later became a POW in the Philippines from 1942-1945.
Frank's story is one in a lifetime, and he will truly be missed by many, many people.
Help be patriotic: go to the Kickstarter link above, and donate quickly! The deadline is fast approaching in one month, on April 1st, 2011. Help make the story of an incredible soul reach the ears of the nation he helped to protect.
