I LOVE Richard Scarry! These are excellent books for learning to read. For example, there is a wonderful picture of Momma Bear's kitchen, and everything is labeled, but it's also very funny and cute, since she is baking a pie (which is burning) for the three hoboes. So you don't have to know how to read to enjoy it. Also, Richard Scarry is not at all Politically Correct, which is nice in an old-fashioned way. His story about Sneef the detective in Busy Busy World remains an all-time favorite
