This Public Service Announcement (PSA) created by Mona Farah of Kuwait Journalists Association, opens with upbeat music and rapid-fire images of the newsroom- journalists stationed at desks, talking on phones, typing stories and editors copyediting text. The next images are of a large-scale newspaper press running off papers. Next, a series of newspapers stack up- one upon the other. This is to show the diversity of newspapers and voices that reach the public and constitute a free press. Newspapers are controlled by nonprofit organizations versus business interests in Kuwait. The newspapers continue stacking higher and higher. The final message, Free Press = Free Country, changes to Free Press = Free Kuwait. Triumphant music punctuates the ending as a logo for Kuwait Journalists Association appears. Mona created this PSA to encourage Kuwait to maintain a progressive stance on the media's right to free speech in the Middle East.

Music and sound design provided by Nabeel Bahy (of Kuwait)

Background:
This Public Service Announcement (PSA) was produced locally in Kuwait City, Kuwait as part of a media workshop, entitled "Media, Activism and Democracy," led by Barefoot Workshops in partnership with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). Thirteen participants from seven organizations, mostly women and youth, learned how to write, shoot, produce and edit, thirty-second noncommercial videos (Public Service Announcements), to raise awareness about social issues. The goal of the workshops was to increase discussion, debate and civic participation in the Middle East. The PSAs are available in Arabic and English to broadcasters and other organizations that wish to distribute them "rights-free" on television and/or the Internet.
