They probably looped everything in the studio individually and mixed it all together rather than play the whole thing live. That's the thing about some bands today... they'll be great in the studio, but won't be able to back it up live. Not putting Black Tide down, I'm just saying.

They have an electric guitar kicking in halfway through the intro.

yeah, that doesn't really explain how they go immediately from acoustic strings to electric feed back, then electric strings. it's probably an acoustic simulator pedal.
