The Beach & The Drive Home (Malibu, CA)

We decided to participate in the "Life in a Day" project by recording and submitting footage of some of the things we did on Saturday, 24 July 2010. According to Kevin Macdonald (the director of the film), submissions can range from mundane, to moving, to awe-inspiring. We found out about this project on the day of filming (July 24th), and late in the day at that, which didn't give us much time to plan anything particularly awe-inspiring. So we just ended up shooting impromptu footage here and there of whatever we did that day. We figured it could always be used as B-roll or something....

24 JULY 2010: Part 3 of 3 - The Beach & The Drive Home

We arrived at the beach in the late-afternoon/early-evening. There was still a good amount of daylight and not a cloud in the sky. In late-July, the sun sets at around 8:00PM or later here. We took a stroll, wrote our initials in the sand, and attempted to skip stones, which I had just learned to do recently (and, honestly, I could use some more practice).

We also included a time-lapse that we took of the beach at sunset. Right around this time, we saw a pod of dolphins swimming pretty close to the shore! It was such a pleasant surprise. We can actually spot their dorsal fins and flukes when going through some of the individual shots from the time-lapse. There were also flocks of pelicans and a few seagulls flying over the water.

Oh, and here's a blooper for you: Aside from writing our initials in the sand, we also wrote "A Day in the Life," because we thought that was the title of the film at the time. We found out later that the film is called "Life in a Day." Oops! I had to cut out that footage because I didn't want any copyright issues with the famous Beatles song. :P

We concluded with our drive home on Hwy 101 in the evening.
