Charley Patton - Jim Lee Blues, Pt. 1 (1931)

Whenever people discuss the "best" or "favorite" Charley Patton tracks, my personal favorites are rarely ever included, nor can they be heard on youtube, don't really know why ;-)

Here they are anyways, enjoy !!

Charley Patton was "the" delta blues man of course, his playing was raw and expressive, a distinctive style, rather dissident to the other blues players of the time. A monument !

The images in the video relate to Patton's life:
- The Dockery farm was the sawmill and cotton plantation where Charley and his family lived from 1900 onwards.
- "The masked Marvel" was the Paramount promotion campaign for his second (or third ??) release, crediting the first 10.000 copies to "the masked marvel" instead of Charley Patton.

- The last image is that of Rosetta, Charley Patton's daughter (one of ??) (last living and known anyways)

  • Ragtimedorianhenry has uploaded every patton song I think and that's really great but he adds reverb to them and it kinda messes up the track.

down the dirt road blues is another song of his that i love, but at least half of his songs are my absoloute favourite and the rest come a close second

  • @busessuck1 Yeah indeed, added reverb, which is just awul. He might have gotten the tracks from some compilation, as I've heard this done before. Once bought a Bessie Smith cd with added reverb, went straight into the trash.

You wonder why they do it though....never heard of a music lover actually appreciating this sort of shock-treatment ;) .. if anything, these old recordings sound very intimate, and that's what I love about them....

  • @busessuck1

I for one absolutely love the reverb, not to forget the cleanup of extreme hiss on these ancient records. I love Charlie more than any other blueser. He's profound and reverb enhances that for me.

  • I have some old Charlie Parker records that have the added reverb, among others, along w/ Bessie Smith, and ain't always a bad thing, but for listening/authenticity purposes, yea the music shouldnt be tampered with.

  • @MrBuk86 Anyway, name me something that isn't somehow recycled...I'll stop ramblin'... I hope C.Patton's in heaven if I get there.

  • Fogerty paid for the gravestone? Well that's a noble thing, so I like him even better now than I already did! Someone should of, especially if they had the dough!

  • @tomrushenblues It's hard to name any old tune that wasn't freely borrowed from, but times were different then between all them beautiful musicians, now you'd get sued for plagarism, but hey....the progress of man....

  • Sometimes the added reverb is ok to some tracks, and i appreciate ragtimedorians vids, but I love this post of Jim Lee, a favorite of mine, cheers!

  • @5thcorps Yup true story, the fact was He wanted their to be one because it was stolen back in the 40s. Sam Chatmon Charlies brother told the story of how people came ans took four of them until the remaining family just gave up. I think the Sam Chatmon interview is still on youtube. Bless Mr Fogerty indeed

  • Also my favorite song of his...
