A group of 3 Orcas spotted off the coast of Vancouver Island. The large male Orca (aptly named "Captain Hook") with the bent dorsal fin has become somewhat of a celebrity in the coastal water of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia. His fame is due to him being one of only 1% of wild Orcas with a collapsed dorsal fin - perhaps due to him spending a significant amount of time in shallow bays and shallow feeding grounds during his adolescence. This video shows the Killer Whales 'spy hopping' and deep diving.

  • omgness i went whale watching at this exact spot two summers ago

  • Thanks for the post. I'm visiting the San Juans next week and have been looking for a good resource to track the pods, any suggestions?

  • Actually, male killer whales have the larger dorsal fins and "Captain Hook", T40, is the big male that you saw with the bent tip traveling with a couple females. Females have the smaller curved dorsal fins. Nice footage of this guy, he really is very popular just like Ruffles, J1, of the Southern Resident Orcas. =)
