A juvenile Grays Beaked Whale (Mesoplodon grayi) off Stanmore Bay, Whangaparoa, North Island, New Zealand. The whale spent about 5hrs off Stanmore Bay (in the waterski lanes of all places!) on Sunday 8 February 2009 in about 3.5m to 4m of water. It displayed strong boat positive behaviour (spending a lot of time checking out nearby vessels), which one expert attributes to the whale's age; it is suggested that it has become separated from it's mother, and given it size, should still be suckling milk... I am not an expert on these whales, but I am told: enjoy it's presence at Whangaparaoa by all means, but don't go swimming with it, don't take your boat (incl kayaks) near it and keep your distance as it is a wild animal out of it's normal habitat (offshore deep waters).
I would love to put him in into captivity and make him do tricks, and become rich off of this rare species of cetacean lol
