The engine is a semi-diesel, in other words, it needs a "spark plug" to get it going. The person responsible for really making this vessel a wonderful piece of history is Captain Ron Ackman of Newport, Rhode Island. Captain Ron owned this vessel for about 20 years. He was the person who completely rehabed this vessel. Give credit where credit is due.

What usually kills them is the cooling water, as it is usually just sea water. the salt corrodes the insides of the cooling channels and clogs it up with rust, resulting in overheating, again resulting in cracked heads or cylinder. Best way to build a freshwater cooling system is to just run a pipe along the underside of the boat to cool the freshwater, and use regular antifreeze in the water.

The max rpm is about 350. I have an old 50hk wichmann type AB myself. Idle is about 80 rpm.

Is this a boat for hire?

It was made in Molde,my hometown.I remember when I was a school kid I had my workweek at the factory, and I interwiewed mr.Ottar Brunvoll, the boss. They quit making engines long ago, nowadays they make side propellers under the trade mark "Thruster".

Thanks for the explanation. Great sound from this engine.

Semi diesel is the engines working procedure, not what fuel it runs on.Diesel principle is when the fuel is ignited by the heat of the compression pressure alone,a semi-diesel has some lower compression and a spark or a hotbulb in addition, hence the name. "Semi-diesel working principle"

Why are you calling it a "Semi-diesel"? Isn't it running 100% on diesel fuel? How did they develop the compressed air for the air-start in 1914?
Fantastic sound from all of these old engines.
What do you feed them and how are they on fuel compared to a higher-rpm engine like a detroit diesel?

Standard diesel fuel but I hear from the old Norwegians that #2 crude works. not sure about bio-diesel....She just sips the fuel at 700-800 rpm..maybe 2-3 gallons an hour. Now she is part of a museum in Maine where we will restore her exterior and clean up the engine room. WE WILL NOT TOUCH THE ENGINE ITSELF.
"As Mr. Brunvoll (the engine builder) told us himself.."You yust keep der oil to her und she vill run forever like dot"
