Oceanic white tip shark starting to get too interested after biting a snorkler off the back of our liveaboard at Elphinstone Reef Nov 04. TOP TIP :- always take your camera so you can stop your subject getting you before you've got a shot of him.

  • Wow excellent footage, but scary stuff...most times the shark circles around to enquire, then leaves. Good job keeping your calm. The oceanic white tip is not to be underestimated (or misunderestimated, as a former US President would say) ( :

    Where is this btw?

  • i think you're thinking of Whitetip Reef Sharks. Oceanic Whitetips are different, much more inquisitive and potentially very aggressive. possibly the most beautiful shark in the sea too, but that wont stop it eating you for lunch :P

  • See, ive been in the water with Great Hammerheads, Lemon Sharks, Black and Whitetip reef sharks, never bothered me too much.

This thing on the other hand might worry me a little, since theyre opportunistic feeders (since open ocean is basically a desert, they have to be).

Still, incredible footage! How was your head after he banged that camera into it lol?

  • Damn White tips scare me. They are the only shark for whom humans are genuinely "on the menu".

They are never in a hurry, so you can hang out with them safely for a good while.

But if you were to spend long enough in its vicinity, it will eventually eat you. Simple as that.

  • The shark probably got attracted by the electric field of the camera. I once saw footage of black tip sharks swimming calmly but then totally going nuts after someone took a picture with a huge camera.

  • fuuuuck that

  • had the same expericence at elphinstone this year in january! i can still feel the adrenalin in my venes

  • I love the pilot fish and white tip relationship. lol

Anyway, you people are crazy to be swimming around these creatures. But thanks for the cool footage. :D

  • need to be careful if a tiger or oceanic starts bumping - they often turn to attack speed . . .
