Ice Cracking on Lake Superior

Listen to the ice shift and crack all along Lake Superior. It's like someone hitting a giant high tension wire.

people hear the ice cracking automatically think its melting or unsafe...this is VERY untrue....I drive on the lake every year and spend MANY hours on the lake fishing and hearing it crack....i should write a book after this one lol

Negative captain, cracking as caused by thawing, like ice cubes in a glass of water. And, it is something along the lines of 28,000 tons per square inch, which is why you want to pull your dock out of the water or there will be nothing left of it come spring

I grew up on a lake...when its a booming negative 30 degress F, u will hear it crack MUCH more than when its warm...im not saying it cracks ONLY when its cold..but this is not from writing or reading this is from personal experience from the last 22 years and every time i step outside my house in the winter..thats why the ice fisherman say its good when its making noise....just some first hand knowledge for ya...and the whole ice thing...ice

cracks in water because the warm temp of the water makes it crack...usually ice cracks when it needs to expand...sometimes creating ice heaves or banked ice on shore sometimes higher than 20 feet..more first hand knowledge...but like u and many others,

ice expands as it cracks not when it melts
