U.S. Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) was presented the 2011 National School Safety Award on behalf of the School Safety Advocacy Council on Friday, the final day of the two-day 2011 Rural School Safety and Technology Conference held at The Center in Somerset, Ky. The event drew more than 100 law enforcement officials, school officials, and others from 13 states across the nation to hear about ways to respond to and prevent active threats and other incidents on school property. The event was hosted by The Center for Rural Development, the Council, and the Small, Rural, Tribal and Border Regional Center, one of the Public Safety programs operated by The Center for Rural Development. Present during the presentation were Curt Lavarello, executive director of the School Safety Advocacy Council, Lonnie Lawson, president and CEO of The Center for Rural Development, and Michael O'Shea, program manager for the National Law Enforcement Corrections and Technology Center system.
