Yeah that is a good story I wish they could come up with a light or something that could be seen even in daylight it's scary because riding is great fun but you have no real defense and you can't see everything.
I don't think my situation was similar. But after taking the 3 day course, I was going down my road and always follow the speed limit which is 40mph. I seen a taxicab on the right should at a stop. I somehow had a feeling he will probably pull out in front of me, which he did. I was surprised because I didn't panic but I gradually hit both brakes on my bike to avoid him.
With your situation, I dunno if there was much that could be done besides sticking with side roads.
I was in a similiar predicament. Your situation is tricky, I asked a friend and he agreed with my thoughts about your situation. Ride the lane line if possible to the right and get yourself to safety/safe distance.
you can split lanes to get in a safer position. instead of being a sitting duck infront of parked cars.
