Here's the actual machine behind all the various East-German numbers stations.
This is from a recording I made in May, somewhere in Germany.

This video is part of the following playlist on this channel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xkc_Ig87TnM&feature=PlayList&p=735C68C...

This machine pronounces, in a monotone voice, a string of numbers used by intelligence agencies for one-way shortwave radio communication with their agents in enemy countries.
This machine belongs to a German collector who has a vast collection of various spy-gadgets.
There were many machines of this particular model produced in East-Germany for usage within the DDR itself or other communist bloc nations, like the Soviet Union or Cuba.

The voice for this machine comes from a swapable printed circuit board with EEPROM's on it.
On these EEPROM-chips resides the actual voice samples of the German lady.
These EEPROMS enabled the machine to pronounce the numbers and other characters in Spanish or other languages depending on which card was inserted on the back of the machine.
THE EEPROM's NEVER CONTAINED THE ACTUAL MESSAGE.
In this video the so-called Speech/morse generator, or "Sprach/morse generator" (as it was referred to in Germany) had the voice and language of "the German Lady" loaded.

The Speech/morse generator can also change the speed of which the pronounciation occurs.
Giving the voice a slightly higher or lower pitch.
A later video in this series will make this apparent.

    nein. das ist so gewollt.

    nimm als beispiel das flieger-alphabet.

es soll einfach akustische missverständnisse bei übertragungsstörungen

    möglichst ausschliessen.

  • "neuen" "fünef"

    Ein bisschen fehlerhaft, nicht?

  • @DrMotorDude yes old son seems that old "annie" could be picked up in the UK at times as well!

  • @grahamkeithtodd I lived in West Germany in the late 80s. Magdeburg Annie could be heard on AM radio sometimes.

  • I watched a trailer to "Stasi east german secret police" on you tube at the start I heard numbers being read out

is it this woman on this machine reading out the numbers?

I guessed it was to convey secret messages to undercover agents, when did the stasi 1st start using these machines? 70er / 80er ?

I find looking at the inner german border/east germany very interesting,I know there's lots of videos in german...isn't it a shame I cant understand what it is about.i could watch them for hour
