In light of conference, we asked RID President Cheryl Moose on what "Growing Globally" means to her. Stay tuned for responses from others in the interpreting community to be posted during the conference week!

Submitted Summary:

Hello. My name is Cheryl Moose, the President of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, RID. I've been contemplating the meaning of growing globally, and in my mind, there are three issues that impact me the most:

First, global growth in the US means stronger partnerships and relationships with our stakeholders like the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), The National Alliance of Black Interpreters (NAOBI) and Mano a Mano. This year RID and Mano a Mano partnered on the 2011 RID National Conference here in Atlanta. Great Work! RID has recently established the Deaf Advisory Council (DAC). Appointments will be made soon to the DAC to ensure that the Deaf perspective is included in all decisions made by the board of directors as well as membership decisions -- at a global level; all decisions will have the Deaf perspective included.

We, RID, must also contemplate our internal global growth among our members, how to meet the needs of the membership, how can we support and encourage leadership opportunities among our diverse member population across the United States. Within RID we have a diversity of cultures, a diversity of skin colors as well as a diversity of specializations within the profession, like educational interpreting, community interpreting, video interpreting, medical interpreting and legal interpreting. How can we ensure that we are providing global support for our diverse membership? Within our membership we have diverse member groups called Member Sections. How can RID provide more support to our Member Sections?

And finally, RID needs to consider international growth -- an international presence within the interpreting profession. How can we support WASLI, the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters? How can we provide stronger support to the World Federation of the Deaf?

These are the three areas that are most important as I contemplate how we, RID, can grow globally and have a global presence within the interpreting profession. Thank you, and enjoy the conference.
