Such beautiful tone!!!

Fascinating; I am used to a quicker and more articulated interpretation, but somehow Gilels makes slower and smoother work nigh-on perfectly. Another stunning performance by one of the best pianists of all time!

This is excellently performed, but I can't help but feel that, had I to play it, I'd restrain the emotion a bit in the interest of the architecture of the entire sonata. Interesting! I'm looking forward to hear the other movements.

@samspianos this is the main concert hall of moscow conservatoire, by the look of it.

Immenso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what venue is this? Also note his breaking finger at 2.39 on the g sharp. Its a no no in most pianists view.

It seems to bother him that this movement is coming out so emotional, he is trying to restrain it, but he can't. He thinks he is being defeated by Chopin's music, but he is being defeated by his pianistic temperament. The music gains the upper hand, it wins, Mr. Gilels gives in. In those boxes the Russians have the 190 proof stuff, all crated for the millitary issue. They figure it puts out good vibes like this, and helps.

a wonderful interpretation. with the very unique gilels touch. great.
Every voice is clearly heard with the typical burnsihed Gilels tone. Wonderful playing!

it's a concert AND a recording session too as Gilels liked having his concerts recorded, he said the best recording studio is the live concert hall. In fact this particular concert was previously released on audio CD, on the Music&Arts label licensed from Melodiya i think.
