Maybe the hexagon shape is coming from the shape of your aperture blades, I think the 18-55 has a 5 blade aperture. Maybe just shows at one particular aperture.
I am doing exactly this type of shot for a current college project, the spinning in the chair makes it so much easier (if you happen to have a spinning chair that is)
