Deciding which species to use is really a question of the look you want for your home. However, some species are harder than others. Doug Robinson, of Certified Carpet Distributors, Inc. (distributors of carpet, hardwood, ceramic, and vinyl flooring materials) explains the 2 concerns when choosing a hardwood floor species -- the look and how well it will wear. For example, oak remains a great value because it is dense and hand-scraped floors in a more traditional home could hide wear and tear. Pine, maple and American cherry will indent more easily than oak or a dense exotic wood such as Brazilian cherry
