In this video we are fitting a Gibson fit SHELF NUT to a Les Paul type guitar we are building.
Here you will see what needs to be done to adjust the height of the nut so that the shelf sits neatly on the fingerboard.

Not too many tools are required - in this video we use the following:

An X-acto or craft knife.
Some feeler gauges - as ever I use inch sizes rather than metric.
Some sandpaper on a sheet of glass to keep it flat - you can use a tabletop provided it's flat

  • we use some glue - usually medium viscosity superglue

  • hey, how would I go about taking the origional nut from a gibson LP studio wothout damaging it in any way?

  • @ravenshield56 . See our Youtube video showing exactly that process - have a look in our other videos

  • Great demo! I have had three of these type of nuts. The intonation is amazing. What I don't like is the material. It never really cuts well and always creates tuning issues. Also the hollowness is bad for that nice ringing sustain you get with bone or brass, or even solid tusq material. About two years ago earvana was supposed to be getting a bone version, but I have never seen it. Hope some day they do.

  • did you glue the nut in place or just drop it in
