Not many bands who have celebrated critical acclaim and established a loyal fanbase call it quits due to a lack of ego but that's exactly what Dan Michaelson's former band Absentee did. Fast forward a couple of years, tours (both headline and support to the likes of The Magic Numbers, The Dodos and Duke Spirit) and the latest offering from Dan Michaelson and The Coastguards "Shakes" was released in October 2010.

Having chanced a 5 minute audience with Dan following their sold out show at London's Lexington in March, we convinced him to drag along his bandmates Laurie Earle (guitar) and Horse (guitar and pedal steel) to St Peter's Church in Bethnal Green one Sunday evening to try and capture their distinctive sound. St Peter's, a grade II listed Norman style church hidden away in suburban East London, has recently been re-launched by Rev. Adam Atkinson with a view to develop a new music project with the youths of the local community through the church and community hall. The church's striking interior and amazing acoustics gave us a perfect setting for Dan's distinctive baritone voice and the lilting melodies of a number of tracks from "Shakes". Special thanks go to Rev. Adam Atkinson and Assistant Pastor Craig Murray for their hospitality. (www.stpetersbethnalgreen.org)

Two very different animations accompany the two songs in this session. Ink drops and swirls followed by a special stop motion animation of three dancers on a black stage lit by a single bulb. The improvised skills of Alex, Daisy and Malika were so visually striking that a longer length animation is now in the pipeline as a release independent of City Sessions. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more details to come. Massive thanks go to AMCK Models, Luke Foy Productions, StudioJojo and O2 Brixton Academy for all their invaluable support with this animation.

Dan Michaelson and The Coastguards are just finishing up on tour with I Am Kloot but keep up to date with Dan's musings online...
