Actually, every northern state except Delaware held state conventions outlawing slavery within their borders before the war. The only states that didn't were the border and southern states and Delaware. I assume you know that right?

The broadest point though is the reality that we are left with. And that being a U.S. victory, with C.S. surrendering. Had the south of won, the glorious rebellion instead would be called the just revolution. Similarly, had Britain won and we were now British, then we would think differently about the failed American rebellion. The southern cause lost though and never achieved it's desired end.
