High fructose corn syrup makes you hungry. MSG is addictive. Fat accentuates the carbs were really looking for, as well the meat. Add a bunch of warm colors and happy slogans to it, and it's no wonder fast food is alluring and addictive.
Also, mmmm, legs.

I can't say I disagree with the fact that processed fast foods are bad, but there seems to be either an ignorance problem or a propaganda agenda going on. The 36 year difference going from 6 billion to 142 billion misses the fact of inflation. Back in 1913, a dollar was worth a dollar. It is now worth less than 3 cents(thanks to the Federal Reserve), so I'm sure that is a factor in the amount spent on fast food, not to mention the population's increase.
