Van takes out traffic pole in Port Colborne in early morning crash.

PORT COLBORNE WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN HIGH-SPEED CRASH
On Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at approximately 5:02 a.m., members of the Niagara Regional Police Service, Niagara Emergency Medical Service and the Port Colborne Fire Service responded to reports of a single motor vehicle collision on Elm Street at the intersection of Clarence Street in the City of Port Colborne, Ontario.
Upon arrival, police located a green 1997 Pontiac Transport Van resting on the side walk at the southwest corner of the intersection. A female was trapped inside the demolished vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. A traffic signal pole at that location had been knocked down, exposing live wires.
Investigators have determined that a lone 28 year-old female from Port Colborne, Ontario, was operating a green 1997 Pontiac Transport Van southbound on Elm Street towards Clarence Street. The female was traveling at a high rate of speed as she crossed over the railway crossing on Elm Street. The grade of the crossing caused the Pontiac to become airborne before landing some distance south. The female subsequently lost control of the Pontiac, causing it to enter into the northbound lane. The vehicle continued southbound while sliding sideways in a clock-wise direction through the intersection. The Pontiacs driver side collided with a traffic signal pole, sheering it from its base and sending it onto the side walk.

The female driver was transported to the Welland County General Hospital, but was later transferred to the Hamilton General Hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition.
SPEED, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS ARE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN THIS COLLISION
This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police - Collision Reconstruction Unit.
Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact detectives at (905) 688-4111, extension 5500.
