Dutch oven cooking - pancakes on the lid
Yes, you can even use your Dutch oven lid as a griddle for items such as pancakes.

  • How long did it take to cook and how manny coals did you use?

  • @Hi199510 -- About 10 coals should be enough to get the lid to the right temperature, although it may depend on the size of the coals. Once the lid has warmed up, it should be just like cooking on a griddle at home.

  • Great tip, but did you oil or grease the lid I see it's wet...? Or did you just oil it prior to storage ? Also whats a good size to get for a new Troop. Were gathering equipment as I speak.

  • @MrJimzyacking -- Once cleaned (but never using soap!), the oven should be given a light coat of cooking oil to help prevent foods from sticking. Don't use too much oil or else it will get stinky if you leave it for too long without using it. You can use a piece of paper towel to wipe the oil around the oven, and it's a good idea to get the lid as well to keep it in good condition. For the pancakes, I sprayed the lid with a non-stick cooking spray as well. A 12", 8qt oven is typical.

  • Thanks man I didn't know that, can't wait!

  • Shouldn't they be called lid-cakes? Great video....

  • I recently rediscovered dutch ovens. I had forgotten how versatile these things are. I've made a lot of things in these ovens over the years including bread, cornbread, stews and cobbler deserts. Now I am going to have to give pancakes a try.

  • You can also turn your DO over and sit the lid on the legs. Good video.

  • Never seen it done before. thanks

  • Thats a great idea. Thanks for sharing !!
