This is the video of the Partial Solar eclipse on 26 January 2009 as seen from Singapore. This is the first solar eclipse of the millenium to be seen in Singapore, and also the first eclipse of 2009. The video was taken through a celestron powerseeker 127EQ (127mm/5" aperture). At maximum eclipse at 5:49pm local time, 79.9054% of the sun's disc is covered by the moon. Unfortunately, clouds covered the sun after maximum obscuration and thus the video stops at that point. Also note that the image is inverted due to the telescope optics.

I captured it from the science centre, behind the omni-theatre.

---UPDATE!!---
The next solar eclipse in Singapore will happen in less than one month's time!! It will occur on January 15 2010, and will cause about 30% of the sun to be covered.

Update: Due to bad weather, the eclipse on 15 July could not be imaged. However, you can view the partial lunar eclipse on 1-1-10 that I have posted.

  • Singapore is going to have another solar eclipse on 16th june 2011 at around 2:22am. :)

  • @falcon56565

Yep :) Hopefully the weather would be favourable

  • And i live in singapore

  • @Annekax1

Yes it is real. In fact, it has also been broadcasted in the news. There were two eclipses visible in Singapore in 2009 and another in 2010. However, I couldn't manage to film the other two due to cloudy skies.

However, if you do not have any solar filters in possession it would be very difficult to view the eclipse or notice any change in the overall brightness of sunlight. Even if 99% of the sun were covered, the day would still be almost as bright.

  • I didn't even see it...AND I LIVE IN SINGAPORE. That totally sucks:(

  • @clarahong1

Most people don't even know there was an eclipse. After all, the sun still looks the same even when it has been covered by 80%.
