  • I much prefer listening to "The Rite of Spring" or "Petrushka" as absolute music rather than program music. Generally speaking, I find dancers an annoyance. Music is what music is "about." I first explored classical music in my 20's, and an LP I devoured was excerpts from Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" which I listened to AS ABSOLUTE MUSIC -- appropriately, considering the place of the work in tonal music. The same, of course, goes for Stravinsky's two significant works. Yes, it's tonal.

  • This is far and away my favorite performance of Le Sacre that I've found. Valery Gergiev is the best living interpreter of Stravinsky's ballets. I saw him in the States conducting the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra performing Mahler's 5th.

Thank you very much for putting it all up in one video.
