If you train to defend a knife attack and the attack is not an aggressive, ongoing attack like this, you are fooling yourself. An attacker who really wants to hurt you is NOT going to step in and throw one slash or thrust and then stand there as you carve him up. This attack is based on Don Pentecost's book "Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out! : Knife Fighting Techniques From Folsom Prison". I would also go so far to say that if you are not familiar with this book, you are not a serious student of knife fighting (modernize your training and read it here for free: ht tp://w ww.scribd.com/doc/3650175/Put-Em-Down-Take-Em-Out-Knife-Fighting-Techniques-from-Folsom-Prisonwwwgrabtheinfotorrent-illegal-Collection-of). Every thug (a guy capable of committing a violent crime) released from prison is somewhat familiar with this form of attack. When you come across the "wrong guy" and he attacks you with a knife, this is how he's likely to be comming at you, though he probably won't give you this much notice that the attack is comming.

If you count, There are 12 to 13 stabs made. The stabbing starts one second in and finishes at seven seconds. The entire attack lasts about 6 seconds. That relates to one stab every .5 second.

What this means to your training is that, at the advanced levels, if the "attacker" isn't attempting to stab and/or slash you about 6 times during the 3 seconds your counter takes, you are not training for a "real" knife fight.

  • Knife Fighting: Losers die at the scene, winners die at the hospital.

  • @cogentsmile Here's a story for u. My wife's ex & her twin's ex had a knife fight over the twin's ex telling my wife's ex that he needed to get his life together (using stronger language). Soon they're both armed with machetes (in the Philippines). When my wife & twin get the call from the twin's husband, it is that he killed my wife's ex. By the time they get home, the twin's husband bled out from a single small neck wound & though permanently disabled my wife's ex goes to jail.

  • The average human has a 1.5 second response time when not expecting it to happen. This guy had stabed him three times before he realised what was going on, and then a second later was on the ground. If you dont see it coming, there's nothing you can really do to prevent it.

  • @1991Hatcher That's why I strongly promote situational awareness in all my classes. If u see a "thug" eyeing u & u leave the area, THAT is self defense as much as a disarm is. The difference is that your probability for success is higher by leaving the area than it is for the disarm.

Awareness also gives u a chance to see the knife coming out of concealment before it is already coming at u.

The earlier u recognize the threat, the greater your chances to dictate the outcome.

  • I do think it is hard to say what a real knife attack consists of and doubt that everybody who is going to pull a knife on you is going to be as motivated as a prison yard assasin but this is an important video for sure. This is such a no win situation that one may as well try to grab and disarm that knife hand before it is stripped but all that does is give you a small chance. There are no magic moves for this kind of a situation. The best defense against a knife......Run!

  • @dutch04 Agree that attacks can come in many forms, but one thing is sure, they are not going to look like the "one step" defense techniques that are taught by many eastern and western martial classes.

It is a fact that if the attacker really wants to harm you, the attack will be ongoing and he is not going to stand there while you attempt to dictate the action.

Awareness, not running, is the best defense. If you recognize a threat, you can act accordingly before running is necessary.

  • When I saw this video, before reading the comments, I thought 'that looks like a prison fight'. Really not the typical attacks seen in some other videos. Scary stuff. This is a back to reality video.

  • @monkofunk212

Wrong... but having that attitude may help you get cut. FAIL.

Don't get cut. It is not a requirement IN REALITY.

  • @ennot no doubt. Awareness, distance, speed, and perhaps a firearm.

  • @bae313 absolutely well said.

  • never been in a knife attack thankfully, otherwise i doubt i would be typing this, but i do try to teach my students they will be cut and how to HOPEFULLY keep it to a minimum and get ahold of 911 services asap. the best they can wish for is a clumsy and slow ice pick style attack but even that wont end well. avoid shitty places as often as possible, keep a sharp eye and a small ego, i've made it 45 years that way. this video is a HUGE service to reality, thank you!

  • That was way to real looking. It gives you a whole different attitude about knife defense.
