@mujaku If I saw a monk I wouldn't give him money, that's no different from donating 10% of all of your money to a church. Religions have always scammed people into giving up money or power and transferring it to the priestly powers. Buddhism is the best religion and in ways is hardly a religion but it too has had people in it who desire control and I bet that idea to give the monks money was thought up by monks

Except Americans, every Asian knows that donating to a monk or a yogi brings good fortune (punya). More to the point, to give what we cling to (money, for example) is disburdening ourselves of psychical obstructions so the yogi's spiritual power can enter us more easily and put us on a higher plane. This is basic 101 Buddhism.
