Episode 2 (out of 3) of the documentary "The Bible's Buried Secrets" (March 2011 on BBC2). This episode deals with the origins of the God of the Old Testament (here only El, the Chief God of the ugaritic pantheon, is mentioned, though other influences exist) and with the possible worship of Asherah, a famous Goddess of the ancient Levant, by the Israelites (who were not completely monotheistic before the Exile, in the 6th century BC).

Interesting review of a particular point raised in the documentary:

  • No shit! The israelites had trouble sticking to God and worshipped other ridiculous gods, so God punished them. It's in the Bible.

  • @Xomanowar99 Once again, the point is not they had trouble sticking to God, the point is they believed in several gods and the notion of monotheism didn't appear among them before the 8th century BC, and still then is was a very relative monotheism.

  • yes he had a wife. she did his head in. "make this, make that, create this, destroy that. don't be hanging around with that guy with the horns, he loves drinking and barbecues"

  • Uh I Wish She Was My Teacher =p

  • This from the same TV series that question's the existance of King David's kingdom? Gimme a break. David's son King Solomon (Shlomon) was known far and wide as the wealthiest, wisest king. Plenty of extra-biblical evidence. This pseudo-historical nonsense is only for those seeking excuses to disbelieve. Check Ivan Panin's research on textual statistics or Simon Greenleaf on the resurrection.

  • @tonetone153 It doesn't say when Cain married. Adam and Eve lived to be 900+ years old. The obvious answer would be that he took his sister as a mate and wife. I have noticed that the supposed 143 contradictions can in essence be classified according to the erroneous assumptions or methodologies that they employ.

  • @ImaBeast7 You're kidding yourself if you think that Judaism influenced all the other religions. There are religions that predate Judaism that Judaism takes stories from. And there are countless religions that never came in contact with the Judeo-Christian religions in their developments. I'm not saying that Judeo- Christian religions didn't effect others, but to claim that most were effected by it is baseless in fact and simply not true. Where would be your proof for your statement?

  • @ImaBeast7 You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Ankhenaten was the earliest to establish monotheism on the historical record. And, if there are no contradictions in the Bible, explain who Cain married in Genesis if he and his parents were the first humans? There are countless others, but start with that. Please, do your homework before you speak. Belief is one thing, facts are another.

  • @tonetone153 there are no contradictions in the bible, just ur interprating errors.

  • @jmikejapan actually jewish was the first. however they were called hebrews looong before jews. same belief and religion. while hebrews was the first religion and was monotheistic, after the ppl scattered sometime in the era of babylon, almost all religions were influence by the hebrew/jewish/christian belief.
