I have a '74 bootleg where Tony does pull it off perfectly, although he's not using the grand piano, he's using a synth.

Tony more often than not did manage to pull it off, but there were a few instances where he mangled it badly. I remember reading about one instance where Tony screwed it up and just threw his hands up in the air in anger, so they just decided to open the song as if the piano intro wasn't even there. After that, they completely dropped the piano intro passage.
