Replacing the standard hex key two piece full length guide rod on the Springfield 1911 Loaded with a GI or RO model guide rod and plug. This eliminates the need for tools to field strip the gun and eliminates the issue of the guide rod coming loose due to the vibration from firing.

Ordered the parts from Springfield Armory directly. Parts list is at the end of the video.

  • after a few months, are you still happy with the accuracy after removing the G-rod?

  • @ProjectDexter I have had no issues with the GI guide rod. However, I have since removed it and put the original one piece guide rod back. The only reason I did this is because the racking of the slide is a little smoother and easier with the full length guide rod. The difference is very slight but it's there and since I need a tool to reassemble my 1911 anyways (I cannot get the slide stop in without depressing the plunger in with a tool first) I decided to change it back.

  • What kinda barrel do you have in the gun?

  • @TheHogger129 The stock barrel.

  • does this void warranty on the Loaded?

  • @FUdirtbag Highly doubt it since the parts I installed were ordered directly from Springfield Armory and they never mentioned anything about the warranty being voided. Also, SA's Range Officer model 1911 uses this same GI guide rod.

  • You no longer need a tool to remove the guide rod - great. Looks like you still need one for the slide lock...

  • @TheEnder42 Aren't there FLGR that are a single piece that do not need an allen wrench or a pin to take down?

  • what do you mean harder to assemble? It is easier with the GI STYLE

  • The other thing about having the old style guide rod is that you can "press chamber" or "press clear" the gun with the edge of a desk/wall/whatever you can find in case your other hand is busy holding a flashlight or something. Never had to do it myself, but it could be useful in a sticky situation.

  • You can get a Wilson Combat full length guide rod that doesn't require an allen wrench. Check out my vid.

  • @TheEnder42 thank you for your honest answer. Have you looked into the Wilson Combat 1 piece guide rod system? It doesn't require an allan key to disassemble and since it is one piece you don't have to worry about it shooting loose. I've heard good things, they run about $25 online.

If you've got tough fingers you don't need a tool for assembly either, but most people do because the edges of the push guide are fairly sharp. -Dex

  • @TheEnder42 where can i view the part numbers for the stainless versions? i looked on their site, nothing. call customer service?
