夜いつものように飼育ケースから出して卓上で遊ばせていたら、目を離した隙に電気スタンドの裏側で逆立ちして卵を産み始めた。上半身は静止したまま尾部だけを繊細に動かし­て器用に泡立て、中の空洞に黄色い卵を産みつける。腹の先にある2本の突起（尾角）で触角のように探りながら卵鞘を作っていく。固まった卵鞘の傍から離れるまでの一部始終­が4時間12分。デジカメによる総撮影時間48分の動画を編集し、10倍速再生にてお届けします。
10x high-speed replay of a Chinese mantis (Tenodera aridifolia) laying eggs behind my desktop lamp. The labor lasted for 4 1/4 hrs in real time. Mid-October, 2006 in Japan.
PS: In northern parts of Japan, there has been an old saying that the higher mantids lay eggs at, the heavier it snows in coming winter. I mean, mantids are said to have a sixth sense to forecast the amount of snowfall to keep their precious eggs from being buried. Do you have that sort of folklore in your country?

You guys can purchase mantid cocoons at garden nurseries - that's where I got mine. Don't think you'll get one of these kind, but they get pretty good sized. I think ideal temp. for them to hatch is 85 degrees F. but you'll have to check that. We once had a squirrel think one of our's was a nut and moved it from the original spot we tied it onto. X-D

she picked the spot herself.

every night i released her from the cage and let her roam freely on my desk.

she liked hanging around the desk lamp, probably waiting for the bugs flying around the light.

and at that night, to my surprise, she began to lay eggs there.
