Irony is that the jump that killed him was supposed to be his last one and was planning on retiring.

The park service demanded he take his rope setup down. He went for a last jump in after dark and was talking on a cell phone as he jumped. The man on the other end of the cell phone later drown when he did an illegal cliff jump by parachute and the park authorities chased him and he fled across a river.

He died when his rope broke during one of his "free fall". Appearantly the weather conditions made the rope weaker. They also say it got entangled and the friction broke the rope. Material failure.

No one thinks Dan's death was admirable. Like Skinner he used questionable gear and was let down by it. Most climbers have done something similar, most times getting lucky. In these cases they ran out of luck, maybe just because they climbed more.

What people think is admirable is that Dan pushed the limits. If someone has the genes and the guts then you can't say anything. He left a kid, yeah that's life, if I was that kid I would be thankful for the genes regardless of what happened.

His gear wasn't questionable, he crossed his ropes during a free-fall; melted through. Don't cross ropes!

I don't think he crossed ropes, he was too careful for that. The mistake he made was leaving the ropes up for several months and going back after they were weathered and intending to just take them down did the fall one last time.

It broke right near his attachment.
