In the fall of 1953, head football coach DeWitt Weaver called student Joe Kirk Fulton into his office to discuss school mascots. Weaver, whose 10-1-0 football team was headed to Jacksonville, Fla. for the Gator Bowl, was not only looking for a bowl game win, but also hoping for a spot in the Southwest Conference.
At the time, Texas Tech was lacking a mascot, and Weaver wanted Fulton to become the Masked Rider, thinking a school mascot might help Texas Tech's admission into the conference.
Fulton agreed and debuted as the Masked Rider during the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day in 1954, establishing a tradition fans would embrace for decades to come.
