I Wish

A song I wrote in 2003 using the Guitar Pro program. Please read the description.

OVERVIEW

A few people asked that I upload this again. This song is one of the sadder songs that I've written and is rather bittersweet in nature. It isn't about angst or "emo" in nature at all, but rather about the power of love.

The song is called "I Wish" because ultimately the wish of the remaining of the lovers, is to be happy. The song is meant to be sung by both a male and a female to show that the female is watching still and what her thoughts are. The bracketed aspects of the song mean both should sing at the same time and overlap each other.. As the song progresses it is revealed that he is contemplating his suicide after his love interest killed herself in front of him and he was powerless to do anything.

The girl is watching over him from the afterlife and is silently hoping that he will not do it, because she doesn't want to see him hurt himself and end his life prematurely, because she loves him. Ultimately, she winds up being powerless to stop him and watches him kill himself as well in the same fashion she died - suffering a great deal of pain in the process as well.

They are reunited in Death, and although it's not specified if they become happy or not, at the end the boy tries to use his tragedy to tell others not to make the same mistakes this couple did and to be stronger.

I did a few things in this song and these lyrics to make it ambiguous and up to interpretation. Although in the above I said boy and girl, that is just for clarity. It's not meant to be specifically outlined because it can really be either - gender isn't the issue here. Likewise the "girls" lines of pleading are written in a manner that they could easily be said by the boy in hate towards the girl for her action, rather then from the girl to the boy in the form of pleading. This is done to show just how similar the love/hate emotions of the spectrum can really be. The theme of opposites being similar is carried out through the boy's actions to kill himself to become happy vs the advice at the end, the beginning seeming like a love song and eventually turning into a bitter sweet tragedy, as well as the chorus itself saying that love can be good and terrible. In the end I was trying to get the listener to feel melancholy and not sure how to feel about what happened. It is both happy and sad, which is exactly what life is meant to be. And again, this is illustrated through Death - carrying out the theme that it's a very fine line.
