San José del Pacifico, Oaxaca, Mexico

San Jose del Pacifico is a tiny village of some 500 residents that is no more than a sprinkling of houses and cabins for rent on either side of a narrow mountain road that winds through thick pine forests. San Jose is a common stop on the international backpacker trail and well-known for the hallucinogenic hongos that grow wild in the forest.

I arrived just after sunset and stepped into La Taberna de los Duendes (The Gnome's Tavern) on Jan. 6, after one week of holiday celebrations on the coast of Oaxaca, enjoying the beaches and hot weather. I had to adjust to the temperature change, put on a jacket, and found myself following a procession down the only road through town. I walked into the most adorable bar/restaurant owned by an Italian, Davide and his partner Heriberto from San Jose. I was immediately treated as if I was an old friend of theirs. I was invited to sit with them for dinner, then invited to stay with them, and another couple in their lovely house for a week.

Whenever I am in Jose del Pacifico, I stop at the La Taberna de los Duendes to have the unbelieable Filete (400 grams).

If ordered rare, they mean rare! So medium would be just fine for the average meat lover.
