Here is the method that I use to sharpen my gouges. I'll be sharpening a spindle roughing gouge, bowl gouge, and my Cindy Drozda Signature Spindle Gouge that I use to turn my fine finials. I sharpen gouges on a Wolverine platform. This video footage is excerpted from my DVD "Finial Star". Please visit my website, http://www.cindydrozda.com for more information about my Artwork, Woodturning Instruction, DVDs, and Tools. My tools are available in the USA at http://www.packardwoodworks.com, and in the rest of the world at http://www.henrytaylortools.co.uk.

  • The gouge (spindle or bowl) is rotated to keep the inside wall of the flute parallel to the platform, not the floor.

  • thongs???

  • @doc289456 , I apologize for the thongs. That is not my usual shop footwear, nor do I recommend them.

  • Cindy, I watched you sharpen your tools before your demonstration in Peterborough Ontario Canada on April 5,2011. It's great to watch your video to get a full explanation on how you were doing it. Thank you for comming to the Kawartha Wood Turning Guild and demonstrating your technique.

  • @nnoco1234

I had a great time sharing woodturning with the Ontario Guilds! What a great group of people! Keep on having fun turning!

  • Cindy, thanks so much for providing this video. I was struggling a bit to get a similar grind on my spindle gouge to the one you demonstrated at Turn On Chicago! This definitely helps! Freehand on the platform is a bit scary though... don't want to suffer from disappearing gouge syndrome :-) -- Danny

  • @woodturnermoose Danny, There's no need to be scared of platform grinding! Use a light touch and with practice you will be a pro! TurnOn Chicago sure was fun!

  • I've watched this video several times, but still need clarification on one point. When sharpening the spindle gouge with the gouge swung to either side, is the flute kept parallel to the floor, or the platform? It appears you're rotating the gouge about it's long axis, but can't be sure.

  • thanks you for uploading very informative. ive paid ninety pounds for a jig to sharpen and i still cant get it right.im going to study and try your method thanks again

  • I must say dear lady that this is the most clear , very well explained and simple to understand video I have seen around. Thanks you for the upload.
