Funk classic by Slave. Some bassists think this line is slapped, but it's actually not. It's just aggressively plucked. Note the octaves in the B section; this is something that is often missed. The octaves are very hard to hear when the vocals are happening because of how the bass is mixed (listen carefully with headphones, and you'll hear it), but it's obvious in the bass breakdown. There are *lots* of ad libs in this line of which I only played a few, so, as always, listen to the original to hear all the variations.

  • Would you please type the tabs for the tutorial?

    Ps. nice job!!!

  • @ThexNisse Thanks. Sorry, but I don't do tab, however I'm happy to help you if you're stuck on a certain part.

  • Dude, I want to thank you for breaking the middle solo part down for me! It seemed so simple but I never had the chance to slow it down to hear exactly what he was doing there. It's simple but fast and I finally got it down now thanks to you! You're real good!

  • @TwinMillMC

Yeah, it's tricky to play it fast. Glad it helped!

  • Wow, you guys are fast! I'm not even done posting the annotations. Thanks. :-)

  • Thank you very much

  • Hmm, LOL! I ended up just filtering the bass line from the OG song just in case you said no! If I upload it, I'll send you the link!

  • Can I sample this, I'll give you credit etc. PM me, I'm sampling the OG song as well for a Hip-Hop song as well.

  • Very good tutorial... so good in fact, I almost want to run out right now to Guitar Center and buy myself a bass to practice tonight! I love that bassline; and no one played bass like Mark Adams (R.I.P.) Thank you very much for posting that.

  • Fantastic job both playing and breaking it down, thanks :)

  • You are beast so is the bass line!!

  • Thanks for the funky lesson. Please post more funky classics lessons!
