We caught this boy in our yard last week. He was limping pretty bad so we figured we would keep him until he was rehabilitated and then release him back out. Well, it's been a week, he's been on Baytril and he's not doing better, but much worse. He has what look like dog bites all over his face. Now he can't even stand up. His heartbeat is extremely slow and very irregular. We had him on Baytril for a week, and Will wants to inject him with Tylan, but i don't want to inject him with another antibiotic when he's been on Baytril all week. Can anyone tell me what this could be?

  • Could it be that a cat got him?

  • @FlowingDepths Dog. Stupid people around here let their dogs chase the ducks. One idiot took two of his chocolate labs off their leash and let them in my yard while I had all my ducks and chickens out there, even the crippled ones that can't walk. He wanted his dog to kill a couple of my hens. I told him next time I'll shoot his dogs if he lets them in my yard. Can you believe people deliberately try to kill my pets?

  • I think he needs to be put too sleep--can you take him to the humane society or something and take him out of his misery..., What is his update? YOu are great people to try and take care of him--God knows who takes care of his creatures--ven material...I notice you are from Louisiana (near that OIL Slick--the oil didn't get him...), or call the REPORT OILED WILDLIFE: 1-866-557-1401 (they are helping the Wildlife down there--maybe they can direct you to assistance for this duck)

  • @KAENLM We did bring him to our avian vet to have him put down. But he held on to this little guy for 5 days and he improved a great deal, so we got him back. He is still a little wobbly on his feet, and blood tests showed he has anemia. So we are holding on to gim and rehabilitating him with the other ducks we have. Just goes to show you that us rehabbers don't always know. I really did think he was going to have to be put down and that wasn't the case. He's improving daily.

  • Poor duck, I feel so bad for him. Would yo happen to know if its safe to give birds crushed calcium supplement that is sold in stores for people?

  • @StopFear Crushed calcium is perfectly ok to give them. I have been giving mine crushed calcium for years!

  • Snap its neck.. Wth are you petting it for its not gonna help. Wanna borrow some #3's??

  • Ask someone with a hunting liscemse to kill it .. Unless it is better.. Otherwise it's suffering

  • poor baby...this is so sad...

  • good stupid duck diserves to die

  • How is he doing nowadays?

  • poor baby duck, glad he's doing better though.

i don't believe that killing the dog would be justified, now shooting the owner of the dog, that would be better.

  • Poor Duck!

I have a question about Muscovies. One of mine lost her toenail. Will it replace itself, or will she be fine missing one toenail? (it may sound dumb to ask, but i am curious).

  • Kaisa how is he??

  • @Kasia5872

Wow. That is ridiculous! I can understand that dogs may have a natural prey drive, but that is by no means reason to deliberately unleash them so that they can terrorize or harm wildlife OR pets. It will be sad if it takes a bullet to teach this man to keep his dogs leashed, but allowing your birds to be harmed over ignorance on his part is not an option/ The safest thing he can do for his dogs is keep them controlled. He must have little empathy to act as he did. Shame on him.
